THE: singular: el and la plural: los and las


examples: el libro (the book), la manzana (the apple) los libros (the books), las manzanas (the apples)


El and Los are masculine and La and Las are feminine. This is a grammatical distiction.
The word for book happens to be masculine, and the word for apple is feminine.
Most nouns that end in a -o are masculine and most that end in a -a are feminine.
(Some exceptions are: la mano, la foto, la moto, el mapa, el día, el problema)

examples: un libro (a book), una manzana (an apple) unos libros (some books), unas manzanas (some apples)

Example Sentences:
La casa es roja. Las casas son rojas. (The house is red. The houses are red.)
El libro es azul. Los libros son azules. (The book is blue. The books are blue.)
El libro está en la mesa. Los libros están en la mesa. (The book is on the table. The books are on the table.)
La computadora es grande. Las computadoras son grandes. (The computer is big. The computers are big.)
Tengo una manzana y unos libros. (I have an apple and some books.)
